Kishin Dōji Zenki - Battle Raiden is a little known side scrolling action game by Hudson Soft. It is based on a japanese animation series featuring a red haired demon prince named Zenki and a cute girl priestess Enno Chiaki. Zenki is most of the time in the shape of a young silly boy who spends much of his time pestering Chiaki. However, his true form is a powerful demon warrior who can be awaken to affront and defeat the seeds of evil planted across Japan. These seeds are in the shape of magic eyeballs that can turn humans into murderous demons. Zenki starts in his boy form and can only battle demons and other monsters with his bare hands. The controller's shoulder buttons get him to parry or rush in one direction. Then, passed the second half of each stage, he turns into his adult-demon form and finally uses his vast and incredible panoply of weapons. He can now use fire-punches, charge up fireball attacks or powerful balls of energy. By pressing down and punch, he can even unleash a special twister attack. Finally, he can consume some of his life bar to fire an impressive ball of flame engulfing everything on its path. Stages are vast and special shrines scattered around each area can trigger all sort of events when destroyed, such as special items, unlock doors, create bridges etc...

Kishin Dōji Zenki, the animation series, is full of cliches of the genre so popular in the 90s. Zenki, in his young boy form, is predictable and his relation with Chiaki unsurprising. However, this game, while I wouldn't call this a hit by any means, is yet quite enjoyable. Controls respond well and some enemies can be quite impressive and really well drawn. Curiously, this game can be quite cheap, I do not know how long this is going to last though, but until it does, I would personally advice you to hunt down one.
