Action / Platform game

Doraemon Nobita No Dorabian Nights is a side scrolling action game by Hudson Soft and is the second Doraemon game released for the PC Engine system. The game is based on a animated movie published in 1991. The game starts when Doraemon's friends decide to visit the various worlds hidden inside their favorite books - Sadly, the poor kids quickly quickly realize it wasn't such a brilliant idea and they all end up being trapped inside those same book. Doraemon must now run to their rescue. The various stages take our friend to the realm of dinosaurs or to creepy haunted houses. Our hero can run, jump or use his stunt gun to freeze his enemies for a few seconds. Special items are also scattered around the game and can be found by exploring caves or by standing on top of bigger enemies or elements of the scenery - The ones worth mentioning are the flying-hat giving the player the ability to fly and therefore skip most of a stage, or a special cream enabling him to walk on water. New weapons can also be collected througout the game, such as the log_gun or homing-bomb-gun. Each 'book world' is divided into several sub-zones all connected by blue doors and Doreamon is free to revisit completed stages at will.

Doraemon Nobita No Dorabian Nights is a fun little platformer. It is, to my taste, better than the first game which was a bit monotonous after a while. Stages have a lot to offer and the various worlds are fun to explore - graphics are on the simple side though but they completely fit the game and certainly remind us of the original animated series. Doreamon's animation cycles and funny expressions are especially well-done and amusing - like when he hangs from the edge of a cliff or when he lays down and sort of commando crawls though small openings. The game look childish and simple at first but it gets pretty tough and you won't be flying through it in one evening. Doraemon Nobita No Dorabian Nights may be a bit repetitive and simple, but you'll probably find it enjoyable is you're looking for a fun and non-violent platform game.
