Digital Champ is a first-person view boxing game by Naxat Soft.
The great originality of the title (at least back in 1989) was to
show the action through the eyes of the fighter in a way somehow similar
to Nintendo's Punch Out released for the Famicom system. Game controls
are simple and straight forward: the directional pad is used to aim, dodge, guard or
block. Each action button controls the corresponding hand. A super punch can also be
triggered by holding down either of them for long enough. The game offers a short
selection of boxers to defeat, from Marciano (highly inspired by Rocky)
to the strong Mick (strangely looking like Mohamed Ali). Each of them
has obviously different graphics, but also different
attack patterns. Damages can also be seen on your opponent's face in the shape of
bruises or injuries.

Digital Champ was probably an eye candy back in 1989. Opponent's
sprites are huge and cover nearly half of the screen, and not that many games
of the 8-bit era got anywhere near a first person view. However, the game gets
annoyingly repetitive and looks and feels badly dated. The overall action isn't very
intense and fights end up on the long and boring side (some of the first
fights can be won by only using the auto-fire !). Sometime you have
this strange feeling of fighting the same guy for hours, which
is not far from the truth. I actually always wanted to finish the
game to see if boxers are real robots as described on the game
cover, but I always ended up switching off the console first.
Finally, I also love some of the hilarious text from the game, like Mick's
teasing speech : your lucky punch can't even phase me.
An average title.
