Devil Crash is an pinball game by Naxat Soft, and it is the sequel of the critically acclaimed Alien Crush originally released in 1988. Unlike its predecessor, Devil Crash features a theme based on medieval and demonic designs, and consists of stone walls, towers, dragons, ghosts, slimes, sorcerers, knights and so forth. The playfield is split into three connected screens that smoothly scroll up and down as the ball moves around the table. Several bonus stages are hidden throughout the game - most of them can be accessed by fulfilling certain requirements, such as sending the ball to specific locations (usually marked by green arrows), others by cracking open parts of the background. The most mysterious is the dormant woman's face located at the center of the second screen, who slowly turns into a reptilian demon. Interestingly, the ball receives power upgrades throughout the game and changes color (inflicting more damage in the process). A two players option is available and a password system (coupled with the Backup system) allows players to save their current progress and score.

Devil's Crash There are a few differences between the American and Japanese versions. First of all, the name of the game was changed from Devil Crash to Devil's Crush. Another detail, more subtle, is the pentagram that can be found at the very top of the playing field - the American version is different and has eight branches instead of five (picture on the right). The pentagram was most probably censored for its satanic connotation.

Teaser text from the American version:
Play video pinball that will set you on fire! Explosive graphics and demonic sound beckon you to the underworld for a devilish pinball simulation. Rebound off the She Giant. So beautiful when she sleeps. So evil when she awakens. Burn up in the bonus rounds where dragons will roast you, skeletons will toast you and sorceres will plan a barbecue around you. Finally, if you flip your way past them all, fight the ultimate Armageddon.

It is rare that a game gets its sequel right, and it is even rarer that a game improves upon its predecessor. Devil crash is such game. It is (literally) demonic, highly addictive, and is by far the best pinball game available for the PC Engine system in my book. It can also be incredibly unforgiving at times, and luck often needs to be on your side. The ball has this dirty habit to fall right between the two flippers, and will cause you to swear and curse the pinball gods for their inscrutable cruelty. But isn't it what pinball games have always been about ? I really recommend this game - great graphics, perfect controls and a breathtaking soundtrack. Devil crash is an amazing title with clever touches all over it. Definitively one of the finest and coolest pinball game ever created.
