Cyber Core is an intense vertical shooter by IGS (Information Global Service). You control an
insectoid-like spaceship and fight varied insect-like enemies, from bugs,
slugs, giant flies and other hard to describe creatures. Its main weapon
is a Vulcan gun and secondary bombs can also be dropped on the ground
(in a way similar to Xevious or Dragon Spirit). Big flying bugs appear from time to time and drop floating icons
when hit, sort of transparent eggs with colored thingies in them:
Red for Vulcan gun, Blue for lasers, green for wave-lasers and
yellow for straight lasers. On top of raising up the power
of your main weapons, those options also forces
your ship to morph and get bigger. The game counts eight
long levels, from cities, forests to more and more organic
scenery and enemies. Finally, your ship comes with a built-in shield,
so you can get hit up to three times before you are done. However,
you will also lose a weapon level.

A version of Cyber Core also came out in 1991 for
Sharp's X68000 computer. The game came on a 5"2HD disk and
was only released in Japan as far as I know. This
version obviously offers nicer graphics with much bigger sprites and
more colors on screen.

Cyber Core really reminds me games like Xevious and
especially Dragon Spirit. Graphics could have been better
but they are correct and serve the game well. On the contrary,
animation and controls are perfect, everything is exceptionally
smooth and responsive. The introduction sequence is a bit
weird though with a guy mutating into an kind of meaty bug.
Nonetheless Cyber Core is a cool shooter and can
be usually found for an incredibly small amount of money.
I recommended it !
