Role Playing game
|
Cyber Knight is a futuristic role playing game by Tonkin House. The story
starts in 2352, when the S.S. Swordfish space ship miraculously escapes a vicious attack
by space pirates. The ship sustained enormous damages and was on the blink of destruction.
The crew had no choice but to do a panic jump in hyper-space. And this is where the game starts.
The ship is lost somewhere in space, most of the crew has perished (including the captain)
and most of the equipment on board is destroyed. The goal of the game is to control the
surviving crew and return on Earth. Their first task will be to find a replacement
for the hyper-space drive. The crew certainly reminds of the one seen in the famous
TV series featuring our beloved Captain and his fellow Vulcan friend. It also comes with a
commander, a doctor, a mechanic and several soldiers. Powerful mechas are also available
and play an important part in the game, especially during fights and outdoor exploration. The game gets our heroes
to visit many alien worlds and also resolve many sub-quests. Another important component of
the game is Mica, the Swordfish's main computer. It often give the player
helpful (or sometimes useless) information about planets or enemies. The game is vast
with numerous systems and planets to explore. A heavy knowledge of Japanese
is needed to play this title.

Cyber Knight was also released in 1992, and enhanced, for the Nintendo's
Super Famicom. The game's story seems to be the same, but graphics are
more detailed and overall better than the PC Engine version. The game only
came out in Japan but an English patch was released by Aeon Genesis in 2001.
Tonkin House didn't stop there and released a sequel called
Cyber Knight 2 : Chikyû Teikoku No Yabô
for the Super Famicom in 1994. An
English patch was released by Gideon Zhi and Z80Gaiden in 2005.

Cyber Knight was definitively a nice surprise. First of all, you
must read and understand Japanese to play this game, sorry, there's no way around it. In
fact there is, find the excellent English patch for the Super Famicom
version. Anyway, back to the game. I wished more RPG had a sci-fi background
instead of the usual 'fantasy world' setting. Cyber Knight feels like a
mix of Star Trek and FTL's excellent Sundog. Vast worlds
to visit, interesting story and side quests, and a nice combat system mixing
strategy and action. Cyber Knight is a complex
and fascinating RPG if you can spend the time and effort to learn the game's
mechanics and survive the countless battles thrown at you. While it has its
flaws (annoying and slow random fights are among them), the game brings
a breath of fresh air to the genre.
