Action / Plaform
Fushigi no Yune no Alice (aka Alice in Wonderdream) is a cute platform game developed and published by Face. The action takes place in a strange imaginary world heavily based on Lewis Caroll's classic novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The game stars Alice in person and tells her amazing story, as she continuously challenges strange creatures and characters from the other side of the mirror, from hostile flowers to the popular Queen of Heart's personal guards. Interestingly, Face took some liberties and also borrowed their inspiration from other classic children novels and fairy tales, such as the gingerbread house from Hansel and Gretel where an evil wooden Pinocchio-like evil puppet awaits for Alice. Face took other liberties as well, and the game also features odd balls such as evil clowns or a large dog playing the tuba. Interestingly, Alice is not really equipped with any weapons to defend herself... instead, she can jump over her opponents' heads or charge up a rather unusual, and yet powerful, sneeze attack. This attack comes with a draw back though, and if Alice charges it for too long, she then turns dizzy and becomes vulnerable for a short amount of time. But Alice has another trick up her sleeves and she can cast spells from a magic book she carries around (however, they can't be used during boss battles). Only one spell is available to her at the beginning of her journey (she can reveal hidden treasures and bonus items with it), but more become available later in the game. Fushigi no Yune no Alice consists of four large areas made out of several sub-stages each, all punctuated by a boss battle.

Gameplay Tips:
Fushigi no Yune no Alice is a tough game and here is some advice. To access the Spell Book, pause the game and press II (don't forget that you can't use magic during boss battles!). Alice's best attack is her jump - although her scream can hit enemies from afar, jumping over their heads inflicts a lot more damage. This is especially true for bosses!

Spell Books:
Here are all the spell books from the game, and their effects:

Fushigi no Yune no Alice is a cute little platform game with a lot of charm, but I feel that it lacks something that could have made it great. The game is definitively wacky all over, with weird enemies and sceneries - have you noticed that the gingerbread house in the forest has some sort of Louis Vuitton wallpaper ? (no, I'm not making this up!). The graphics and the soundtrack are more than decent, but stages tend to be monotonous overall, and several bosses are reused throughout the game. Then the difficulty is uneven, enemies respawn and some bosses will simply wipe out all your lives before Alice even gets a chance to sneeze out her first attack. She also has some sort of inertia that makes her hard to control, especially when jumping onto small platforms surrounded by deadly spikes. All in all, Alice in Wonderdream is correct and is full of surprises and hidden bonuses, but it doesn't have that special spark that could have made it an excellent platform game.
