Aldynes is a side scrolling shooter by Hudson Soft and
is one of the three shooters available for the SuperGrafx system -
the other ones being the popular 1941 and the less popular
Battle Ace.
The action takes place in 2020 and the Earth is under attack.
The player controls a star-fighter against a never-ending armada of enemy ships.
Four different weapons are available including a front Vulcan gun,
a 2-ways curved beams, lasers and a bubble-spread gun. All of them are obviously upgradeable
(up to five times) during the game. Other important assets to Aldynes
are the floating robotic orbs that can be collected throughout the game.
Once activated, they can either stay close to the fighter and protect it or just
do what floating orbs seem to be best at randomly
wander around the screen and shoot down anything getting too close to
they firing range.
Finally, a small shield at the front of the ship can be activated at any time by holding
the fire button. This feature can feel rather weak at first but happens to be utterly necessary
later in the game.

Aldynes is one of those rare games released for the Supergrafx system and
it is simply amazing. Graphics are detailed and well animated despite being on
the 'dark side'. Technically, be ready to get your eyes filled with Supergrafx fireworks with zillion
of sprites on screen, multi-level scrolling, smooth zooms and rotations. The first
boss is pure delight and definitively sets the tone.
The gameplay doesn't suffer much from it, nonetheless the game is overall very hard to beat and suffers from
a steep learning curve. It definitively takes time and a lot of patience to master the beast. Some parts are
similar to Irem's R*Type where players have to memorize what to
do and where not to go. But once you get the hang of it, you will more
than certainly love it. The shield option also adds a lot of strategy to
the whole game, I only wished it was a little bit more spectacular.
Aldynes is sadly little-known and can fetch high prices,
do not forget to top that with the price of a Supergrafx system if you do not
already own one, the game being only compatible with it.
