Here is probably one of the most sought after PC Engine game soundtrack. Only the thought of listening to arranged versions of some of the most famous Super Star Soldier music tracks can easily get any fan of Hudson Soft's shooter to overheat.
This game soundtrack was released by Fun House in 1990. The first six tracks are remixed and arranged tunes from the game. They all are synthesized (except for the third track) and definitively bring a breath of fresh air to those old tunes, like seeing an old friend after a long time. They obviously sound much better than the original score which 'simply' used the PC Engine onboard sound synthesiser (despite its outstanding quality). But do not expect a huge quality improvement though, they do not exceed what Hudson Soft produced in later CDRom games such as Star Parodia. However, they have lost a lot of their punch in the process. The fast drum beats from the original music tracks have been replaced here by more traditional (and slower) rock and pop percussions, and I can't help but feeling that some of the intense rythm was sadly lost this way. This is especially true for the forth track which remixes most of the boss encounters musics, it has sadly lost a tremendous energy.
The third track, a remix of the ending theme, is probably my favourite. It has a nice orchestral feel to it. It is also the only track to use real instruments and its quality is substantially better than the rest of the album.
The fifth track is a remixed score from Star Soldier and Hector'87 released much earlier for Nintendo's Famicom system and part of Hudson Soft's caravan contests. Those tunes can also be heard in Super Star Soldier during the two score attack caravan modes.
Then the seventh track forward are all the original musics from the game. Nothing uncommon here, video game soundtracks usually followed the same format.
All in all this soundtrack is an interesting piece of PC Engine history and I recommend it to any fan of Star Soldier, otherwise it's questionable. It is also hard to locate and can fetch high prices, even in Japan.
