Hawk F-123 is the sequel to Pack-In-Video's other shooter Power Gate released on HuCard in 1990. Once again, the player takes control of a high-tech fighter plane. In a way similar to Power Gate, waves of enemy planes and helicopters throw zillion of tinny grey bullets are your plane and try to stop your progression. Our fighter plane can use three different upgradable weapon systems: Red for Vulcan Gun, Yellow for spread-bullets and Blue for Laser beam. On top of that, other weapons can also be collected and will add ground or homing missiles to your plane. Tinny planes can also be picked up along the way and be used as options. In a way very similar to Power Gate, secondary weapons are triggered with the second action button. You start the game with none, but they can later be obtained in the same way other bonuses are. The list includes Super-Bombs, 8-ways exploding bullets, rotating shields and more. Those weapons also end up floating around when your fighter is destroyed so they can be collected again. Stages vary from deep canyons to desolate desert and cities at night, with of course a boss waiting at the end of each of them.

Here we go again ! Pack-In-Video is back in the race and they are trying to get an acceptable shooter out. Yet, Hawk F-123 is their best attempt. They have definitively done a better job at it than before. Graphics are much nicer than anything I have seen in Power Gate, which wasn't a huge task, and there are a couple of nice technical achievements, like the smooth parallax scrolling present in every stage (even if the same screen seems to be looping over and over). They have also greatly improved the gameplay and in-game soundtracks. All in all, Hawk F-123 is better than its predecessor, namely Power Gate and looks more than acceptable for a Pack-In-Video production. It is however an slow paced and average shooter.
